Wheldon Infant School & Nursery

Admissions

Nursery

Children are welcome to join our Nursery the term after their third birthday. Admissions are at the start of our Autumn term (September), Spring term (January) and Summer term (after Easter). We have an experienced staff team who strive to provide an interesting and exciting environment for learning and development.

Miss Southern, our Nursery Teacher, would like to share this information with you:-

"Every day in Nursery is different, there is always an adventure to be explored and lots of learning to be done. In Nursery we lay the foundations for your child’s future learning through a balance of child-initiated and adult led learning opportunities. We start the day with our self-registration and go straight into provision in our enabling and well-planned classroom. We then come together as a group to do our register, daily calendar and share any exciting news. We have a daily group maths carpet session to kick start our learning which follows a weekly focus in line with our curriculum. We then explore and learn during our continuous provision time. We have snack both in the morning and afternoon alongside our friends. After a busy morning, we then come together to do our dough disco or squiggle session to help with our gross and fine motor skills to get us ready for early writing. We then enjoy our speaking and listening session or a topic-based carpet time, this sparks curiosity and enhances our learning further. After such a fun filled morning it’s time for lunch, with the other school classes, in the dinner hall supported by our lunchtime supervisory assistants. After lunch it is straight back into exploring continuing to spark our curiosity and learning experiences in our nursery environment. We come together as a group and do a group phonics session carrying out lots of fun games and activities. Following this we do our afternoon squiggle or dough session. We continue to have lots of opportunities to learn and explore through play both indoors and outdoors. We offer a free flow learning environment between indoors and outdoors, the outdoors provides the children with different learning opportunities. It encourages children to ask and answer questions, notice and appreciate the natural world and make observations. We finish our day sharing our fantastic learning and experiences from the day, sending home our marvellous me badges and reading our weekly story. Our Nursery day is sometimes enhanced with our weekly forest school sessions and we also carry out exciting activities linked to our topic-based learning such as baking or creative crafts. We aim to create a welcoming, calm, happy and purposeful atmosphere in Nursery in which everyone feels comfortable, motivated and takes pleasure in their learning."

Miss Cummings, our Early Years Phase Leader has this to say:-

"Reception marks most children’s very first step into formal school life. We understand and value the importance of learning through play and this underpins our learning and development in reception. We build upon the skills children have acquired in nursery and we begin to use these to develop our knowledge across all areas of learning.

Children start their reception day by moving their names on the self registration board. They then take part in a morning writing challenge, this develops as the year goes on and progresses as the children develop their writing skills. There is then a short session of provision time; this is an opportunity to socialise with their friends and to talk about things which excite and interest them.

We then take part in our daily literacy session, here we read stories, listen to poems and rhymes, learn to write and develop a love of reading and literacy. After our carpet session we move into continuous provision where we will be busy exploring and discovering a range of exciting activities both in and out of the classroom. We will take part in adult led tasks throughout the morning but will have lots of opportunities to learn and play with our friends.

We stop during the morning to have our snack and milk time, we use this as a social time. We share our experiences and look at photos or videos sent from home on Tapestry. After snack is more learning in provision and adults work with children in groups for their phonics lessons.

We have dinner in the school hall; here we learn how to be independent when cutting and eating our food, we use our manners and become confident with using cutlery. After lunch we go out to play with the rest of the children in school, it is exciting to mix with other children and make new friends.

Then we have our daily maths lessons, we learn about numbers, counting, shapes and lots more! After our carpet session we practice and develop our skills in the provision again. Adults support learning and play according to the children's interests and our learning focus that day.

At the end of the day we finish with a story session and oracy. We love sharing books in reception and we think this is a fantastic way to end our busy day!"
