Nursery - Miss Cummings

September 2026

Topic: Ourselves - What's your superpower?

In the event that our school has to close we have added a series of links below which your child can follow. Once your child has completed any work we would love to see photos on tapestry. In Nursery we believe the best learning comes through play and exploring so spend lots of your time sharing experiences with your child!

Phonics

In phonics we will learn to distinguish the difference between sounds. We will learn animal noises, vehicle noises and everyday noises e.g. a phone ringing, a kettle boiling, a doorbell. You could go on a listening walk at home and name the sounds you can hear.

To prepare children to learn the pure sounds and to begin to tune in with different sounds below are some FRED games. You can also have fun by adding FRED talking into your daily routine for example, asking your child to find their h-a-t and see if they can guess what you are saying.

Maths

As mathematicians we will be looking at colours, matching and sorting. We will be exploring different characteristics of objects including colour, size and shape. See if your child can find things which are different colours around the house and put all the red things together, the blue things together etc. They could have a go at saying some number names as they count how many things are green etc.

Literacy

As writers we will be looking at recognising and writing our own name and having a go at copying some of the letters. Can you support your child at writing their own name? This could be on their pictures, in cards or on shopping lists. Start with the first letter to help your child recognise their own name.

To develop our fine motor skills we will be doing regular dough disco sessions, follow the link below and have some fun at the dough disco!

As readers we will be looking at a range of stories, thinking about the problems and solutions in stories. Whilst you are reading at home can you ask your child the following questions;

-Who are the characters?

-What is the problem?

-What is the solution?

-Would you change the ending?

Below is a letter formation sheet which will help you support your child at beginning to write their own name.

Understanding the world- Historians

As Historians we will be talking about the past by looking at baby photographs and comparing them to how we have changed. You could look through some old photos at home, show your child what you looked like as a baby and talk about how they and you have changed over time.

Expressive arts and design-   DT

We will be linking our Art learning to the work of Matisse. We will look at creating pictures by collaging and printing. We will explore cutting and tearing paper to make a collage. You could use tin foil, tissue and old wrapping paper at home to create your own collages in the style of Matisse.

Physical development

As movers we will be running forwards, walking forwards and backwords and jumping forwards. You could play games to practice these different skills at home. You could also develop fine motor skills by cutting, threading, writing, painting and building.
