Phonics

1. Reading sounds

Here is a video showing the correct pronunciation of set 1, sounds. Turn off the volume as the video plays to see if your child pauses or struggles to recognise any of the sounds. If they do, please go over that sound with your child. Play some exciting games with your child, such as Fred talk games to help their oral blending skills. Below is a document which explains how to play some FRED games with your child.

Writing

It is super important that we are forming our letters correctly. In class this half term, we will be focusing on the 'zig zag monster' letter family.  The zig zag monster letter family consists of the letters v,w,x,z.  In this letter family we discuss how the down and up movement makes the zig zag pattern. When writing our zigzag letters we have to remember to keep our lines straight. In addition, we also use the RWI handwriting rhymes to remember how to form each letter. You could write the letters using different materials such as chalk, pencils, in flour or shaving foam.

We are indepdentently trying to write short sentences this half term. Take a look at some activities to do at home with your child linked to our topic.

Understanding the World

In our Geography topic, we will be exploring different places around the world and comparing them to Castleford. You could support your child by looking at a country you’d both like to learn more about or somewhere you would love to visit. Using tools like Google Earth you can explore different areas together and talk about how they are similar or different to where we live.

As part of our Science learning, you could encourage your child to help with recycling at home. Look at the items you throw away and talk about which things go in the recycling bin and which go in the normal bin. Can your child help to sort them? This is a great way to learn about looking after our environment. You could even create a piece of art using the recycled materials!

Expressive Art and Design

As part of our Art learning, we will be exploring the work of Andy Goldsworthy, who creates artwork using natural materials. You could support your child by going on a walk together to collect items such as leaves, sticks, petals or stones. Can your child use these to create their own piece of natural art? They might arrange their materials into a pattern, picture or shape. You could take a photo of their creation to share, as their artwork can be temporary and may change over time. There are some great examples on the webaite below:
